Who We Are

We Are Evergreen was formally established in the City of Bellaire on September 16, 2024 via Ordinance No. 24-070.  This ordinance was unanimously adopted by the Bellaire City Council to establish an ad hoc Evergreen Park Committee, appoint members, and set forth the committee's charge.

We Are Evergreen began developing a strategic plan which will guide our work during the next 2 years to launch the goal of fulfilling this planned community premier green space through community surveys, fundraising and site development. Evergreen Park is slated to be a state-of-the-art premier playground and aquatics center for the Bellaire and surrounding area.

Playground

It is the goal for an all-inclusive playground to be built that will remove barriers to play and provide people of all abilities to play, learn, and gather in a truly accessible and safe environment, fulfilling the needs of this underserved community. A Grant of $600,000 was awarded through the petition of Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher through HUD.

Aquatics Center

Aquatic recreation provides a positive impact on communities and serves as a focal point for social interaction and physical health. It can benefit the economy both directly and indirectly by providing jobs, increasing property values, and supporting economic development and growth.

Greenspace

Evergreen will provide greenspace that appeals to all ages to nurture a healthy lifestyle for daily living. Greenspaces foster social cohesion by providing accessible and inclusive spaces for recreation and relaxation creating a multigenerational outdoor experience.

The History

 Evergreen's Beginnings

The property for Evergreen Park was acquired by the City in the early 1950’s to be used for a park site, Pee Wee ball field and water plant. The existing pool was built in the 1960’s.

It was a grass root organization, The Friends for Bellaire Parks, that organized in 1979 to plan the construction of a playground. The plans were completed by a Texas A&M architectural student. In 1981 playground equipment, landscaping, picnic tables, benches and split rail fence were added. In 1994 and 2006 the playground was renovated, and outdated equipment was replaced.  The pool was not repaired and update until 1996.  A year-round, heated therapy pool and office building was constructed in 2000. Shade structures, wind walls, new lighting, pool house roof and pool blankets were added in 2001. The pool house was reconstructed after a fire in 2013. The following year in 2014 the city water tank was removed, and irrigation landscaping were added for additional recreational land use in the park. In January 2016 a conceptual plan was accepted by City Council to redevelop the park complex but post Hurricane Harvey the project was put on hold until flood mitigation infrastructure could be implemented.
